Over six million people enjoy better vision due to LASIK or Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis. People who are nearsightedness, farsighted or those with astigmatism are choosing LASIK as an alternative to contact lenses or eyeglasses. Advances in laser technology including the Visx, C ustomVue® excimer laser and the IntraLase™, femtosecond laser allow our doctors to offer a far more precise LASIK treatment than just a few years ago.
The LASIK procedure
In the LASIK surgical procedure, the surgeon corrects vision by reshaping the cornea (clear front surface of the eye) with the cool light beam from an excimer laser. The reshaping is performed under an extremely thin flap of cornea tissue. After surgery the flap is put back in place without stitches and most people return to their normal activities within 24 hours with their vision corrected.
One of the most important advances in the LASIK procedure involves the science of wavescan and higher order aberrations. Using a wavescan analyzer our surgeons can actually map the very tiniest imperfections in an individual’s visual system. Those imperfections are called higher-order aberrations. Like a fingerprint, every person’s wavescan is completely unique. Your surgeon can use information from the wavescan to create a customized surgical plan tailored specifically for your eyes.
The creation of the thin layer of corneal tissue or flap is the first step in LASIK. Typically most surgeons create the flap with a mechanical device called a microkeratome. The microkeratome uses a disposable blade to create the flap under which excimer laser is applied to correct vision. Our surgeons are pleased to offer an alternative to the microkeratome. The advanced technology of the Intralase™, femtosecond laser creates a thinner, more precise flap of exact shape & thickness. LASIK with Intralase™ has been clinically proven to produce a more precise flap and better vision.
LASIK is performed on an outpatient basis and the actual surgery takes less than a few minutes per eye although you will be at the surgery center for a few hours. Anesthetic eye drops are administered, so you remain awake and comfortable. Afterwards you are sent home to take a nap.
The morning after surgery, patients are very excited about their new vision and return to their normal activities including work and driving.
