Diabetic Examinations

Diabetic Examinations

Diabetes can affect your vision by causing a variety of eye diseases. It is important that diabetics control their blood pressure and blood glucose to the best of their ability to minimize the risk of developing diabetic ocular complications. It is also important that an eye exams should be performed at least once a year or as soon as any potential problems are detected in order to ensure early detection of any serious conditions. Early detection is the strongest protection against diabetic eye diseases.

Diabetic eye conditions can be detected through a comprehensive eye exam. A comprehensive eye exam involves a visual acuity test to measure vision at various distances, an eyeglasses check to optimize vision, and a dilated eye exam to examine the structures of the eye for any signs of disease. During your examination, your doctor can examine the eye for disease. If there are signs of diabetic retinopathy developing closer observation or treatment may be recommended.
